Review: Beautiful Lawman by Sophie Jordan (Devil's Rock, #4)

Here's a little bit about Beautiful Lawman
Add on [goodreads]

From the wrong side of the tracks and with most of her family in jail or dead, Piper Walsh is used to everyone in town thinking the worst about her. It doesn’t seem to matter that she’s worked hard to build a good life for herself. So she isn’t surprised that when she comes into contact with Sweet Hill’s wildly irresistible, arrogant sheriff, Hale Walters, they’re instant adversaries. Piper has nothing in common with the town golden-boy-turned-lawman—and she refuses to be a notch on his bedpost.

Despite rumors, Hale avoids fooling around with the women of Sweet Hill, many of whom are hoping to get him to the altar. But staying out of Piper’s path is proving near impossible. The infuriating troublemaker clearly has no respect for his badge. As she continues to push his buttons, it becomes clear to Hale that he must either arrest Piper—or claim her as his own.

Review:

The fourth book in the Devil’s Rock series involves Piper Walsh and Hale Walters and at first glance, it looks like a case of opposite attracts.

Piper is stuck in a town where everyone seemed to judge her by her family’s last name which is leading her to live a hard life, but she does it for her sister Malia. She isn’t afraid to speak her mind though and no one would think of her as a fragile girl. She gives as much as she gets especially around Hale who seems to know how to push her buttons anytime they meet. When the fear of losing the guardianship of her sister if she can’t provide for her, she takes on a job that she never anticipated she would ever do which put the story of the book in motion and bringing her more and more often in the presence of Hale which she can’t help but argue with.

Hale is the definition of the righteous man; always going by the law. The town seems to worship him because of his upbringing and how he followed his father’s footsteps. He’s living the opposite life of Piper and he tends to judge her like the rest of the town. But while Hale steers clear of any relationship of any kind, he is drawn to Piper and he can’t get her out of his head. He is determined to understand her even if she isn’t making the job easy.

Piper and Hale are both outspoken people and whenever they interact; neither of them wants to step down. Neither of them is afraid of confrontation which often leads them into situation that gets out of hand, but you can’t deny the attraction between the two of them which makes this relationship even more explosive.

Throughout this book, these two will learn that there always something deeper to someone’s personality than their first impression. The expression “don’t judge a book by its cover” applies perfectly not only to this book but to the whole series.

I could tell you more, but I’m trying not to spoil anything. Let’s just say you will be hooked from the first chapter.

All in all, this book was probably my favourite in this series. As much as I loved the others, this one just got me hooked on the people because they made this book so interesting.

I was given an advanced copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

He’s let a lot of people down lately, including his daughter. Sutton always promised his little girl he would never disappoint her and that he would always be there when she needed him. Until he wasn’t.

The truth is, he’s used to disappointing the women in his life. First was his mother who couldn’t find a reason to stick around when he was growing up. Then there’s his ex. The woman who takes unbridled delight in making his life incredibly complicated. Luckily, his daughter is still young enough to believe her old man is some kind of hero. But, he knows the day is coming when she realizes the truth, that he’s just a man with some serious flaws and a list of ever-growing weaknesses.

Finally, there’s the woman he’s desperately trying to forget with every shot tossed back and each pill popped.

He more than disappointed Emrys…he almost got her killed.

Her love is steady and sure. It’s a shelter shaped by conviction and silent assurance.

Emrys Santos is lost. Everything in her life feels pointless and futile.

She’s been busy running away from her feelings and all the people who love her the most—including her best friend, the one person who knows exactly what she’s been through. They promised to always stick together and to lean on one another. It was a promise Em had to break so she could lick her wounds and figure out her next move. Review:

This series only gets better and better. I started Shelter knowing that it was going to be hard to put down and knowing my feels would be going all over the place. And you know what? I was right. Once I started this book, I just wanted to know what was going to happen next. You don’t have time to be bored in this book as there is always something happening.

Emrys and Sutton both have a lot of issues to solve due to the events from Retreat (hint, go read it if you haven’t ;)) and both of them are dealing with them differently. Emrys ran the first chance she got until she realized that it wasn’t a solution while Sutton simply tried to forget his failure in alcohol and pain killers.

When Emrys finally decides to confront Sutton and wants to tell him everything she needs to tell him, she butts head with a Sutton she doesn’t know and who is hell bent on ignoring her existence. But she’s done running away and the cowboy won’t scare her away.

Sutton’s life really took a bad turn and he is in no rush to come out until it’s too late and his family finally pushes him to deal with his problems or else, they were going to take matter into their own hands. It’s the wake up he needs but working his problems isn’t easy and Emrys’ presence at the Ranch isn’t helping as she is a reminder of his failure.

But even as Emrys and Sutton’s undefined relationship starts, nothing is ever easy for the cowboy has more problems seems to follow him. Trying to deal with his issues is already hard for him but whenever something else big falls into his path, he only finds comfort with Emrys. They actually both find comfort in each other but just for different reasons. They complete one another even if they seem to be the opposite one of another.

I wouldn’t say their issues were due to a miscommunication because it wasn’t. They both carried guilt about what happened, but neither seemed to understand that at first, still engrossed in trying to subdue their own guilt. Working through those isn’t an easy path and as you follow them throughout the book as they try and you can only go through their feelings at the same moment as you get so engrossed with their story.

I’m finishing this review because I feel I might spoil it if I continue and I want you guys to discover and love this book as much as I did.

But overall, I’m looking forward to the next book and I recommend this series with the highest of 5 stars because it has everything. Jay Crownover has a way of expressing the thoughts and feelings of characters so perfectly. This is a 5 stars series for me all the way. So go grab this second book or if you haven’t started the series, go grab Retreat.

Emrys

I’d been fooled once by the promise of quiet nights and serene days in the sunshine. I believed the brochure when it said I could leave my worries at home and escape to a simpler, quieter kind of life. I let myself be lured in by the picturesque landscape and stunning mountains. I foolishly fell prey to the temptation of leaving my current set of troubles behind in San Francisco while I hid away in the middle-of-nowhere Wyoming.

I now knew firsthand the glossy brochure that brought me to Wyoming the first time was nothing more than a bunch of pretty, packaged lies. I knew the bar brawl erupting in front of me was hardly the worst thing that could happen here. In fact, the level of bloodshed and violence was child’s play compared to what I’d witnessed the last time I’d stepped foot in this small, quaint town. Well, I hadn’t really been in Sheridan last time I was here. I’d spent most of my time in the backwoods that surrounded the Warner brothers’ ranch, which was still a good forty-five minutes outside of this tiny town. The ranch was where I was currently trying to get to so I could see my best friend.

When I left Wyoming, I told myself I would never come back.

Ever.

I told myself there was nothing here for me but bad memories and heartache. I was a pro at lying to myself, at telling myself exactly what I needed to hear to justify my actions. I could convince myself of anything, like it was okay that my last boyfriend stole my grandmother’s silver when I kicked him out because he needed it more than I did. I had no problem believing that pulling Leo out of the city was the only way to heal her broken heart even though she didn’t want to go. It was easier to distract her than it was to watch her wallow. I persuaded myself into believing what I needed to heal was space and solitude. I held onto that until time passed and I was still a mess. I was sick of my own company and of hiding from everything I was feeling. I was the one who always went out of my way to fix everyone else around me, it wasn’t exactly a shock to learn I didn’t have the skills to repair myself. I spent my days helping others focus on their goals, on doing better and achieving more, so I didn’t have to think about the lack of any ambition of my own. I turned thirty at the end of the year and I was still trying to figure out what and who I wanted to be when I grew up. I’d been aimless for a long time; the only direction in my life come from the fact I knew all the way down to my bones that I had to go back to Wyoming and face off with Sutton Warner.

Every once in a while, you need to get away from it all.

I was a woman on the edge, shaken and shattered after a breakup that felt like it tore my entire world apart.

My best friend, sick of watching me drown in misery and melancholy, harassed me until I agreed to go with her on a week-long wilderness retreat.

She promised days spent bonding and getting in touch with our inner bad-asses.
It was supposed to be all about the two of us roughing it and making do with the bare minimum. She assured me we were going to be pushed to our limits in ways that were unimaginable. Neither one of us could have ever guessed just how right she was.

Nowhere in the glossy brochure did it say anything about the fact I was going to have to battle the insufferable but deliciously rugged and sexy trail guide instead of the elements. The brochure also forgot to mention the part that warned when you left civilization behind, there was no place to pack your inhibitions and fears.

I was told that I would be facing a week where the only thing I should expect was the unexpected. However, no one mentioned that I was going to have to fight for my life…and my heart as soon as I ventured into the unknown.

I was a pro at hiding from my feelings but when it came time to face a real threat, one that could change everything, I learned I was more of a no surrender, no retreat kind of girl.

Retreat is a standalone novel, the first in the Getaway series which centers on the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women that dare to love them.
